Priorities
•Improve Pill Park and Pill Rec.
•Increase provision of youth facilities across Pill.
•Make better use of existing community places.
•Ensure local facilities can meet the needs of different cultures.
•Help community organisations in their efforts to create their own facilities.
The plan below presents the main community facilities and local amenities around Commercial Road and Alexandra Road. The main points identified by the analysis are summarised below:
There are a number of churches and mosques along Commercial Road and Alexandra Road that act as places of worship and community facilities.
The established community buildings are spread across Pill and are also largely limited in physical size and capacity.
There are limited indoor sports facilities in the area.
There are few other outdoor playing areas.
There is a basketball court to the rear of Commercial Road that is part of an ongoing regeneration scheme by Newport City Homes. The new scheme envisages the regeneration of the space into a flexible public space, and has been subject to ongoing engagement and has planning permission.
The local allotments are well-used across the neighbourhood, and include the Portland Street community allotment, which has been well-planned and invested in.
