Priorities

•Prevent fly-tipping.

•Improve lighting and surveillance.

•Protect local shops and businesses.

•Create safe and friendly streets.

The plan below shows areas of crime hot-spots around Commercial Road and Alexandra Road. The main points identified by the analysis are summarised below:

  • Commercial Road suffers from anti-social and criminal behaviour in the daytime and evening. The area termed the ‘Front Line’ is a concentrated area for such activities, but the connecting streets are impacted by it.

  • Local residents reported feeling unsafe walking on Commercial Road, with many choosing not to use the space.

  • A number of the play spaces are also afflicted by anti-social and criminal behaviour. This includes Pill Park and the playground on Ruperra Street.

  • Parts of Pill suffer from consistent fly-tipping, with a noticeable area on 153 Commercial Road.

  • There are significant regeneration proposals being undertaken around Commercial Road that are improving the quality of key housing areas, and in doing so addressing known anti-social behaviour issues. This includes ongoing investment by Newport City Homes into its estate, the regeneration of Constable Close by Linc and Tredegar Court by Melin.
